A seismic swarm in the Campi Flegrei area of Italy caused extensive shaking and forced hundreds of residents from their homes in Pozzuoli.
The events underscore the persistent danger posed by the Campi Flegrei caldera, a volatile volcanic region where ongoing activity frequently threatens urban centers. The scale of the recent displacement highlights the fragility of local infrastructure against volcanic-related tremors.
Authorities recorded more than 170 tremors [1] during the seismic sequence. The shaking resulted in 26 injuries [1] and left approximately 300 residents displaced [1]. Local emergency services managed the evacuation of those whose homes were deemed unsafe or who feared further collapses.
Residents described a scene of chaos as the ground shifted beneath the town. One resident of Pozzuoli said, "Pozzuoli tremava, abbiamo perso tutto," meaning Pozzuoli was shaking and they had lost everything.
The seismic activity is linked to the ongoing volcanic processes within the caldera. These events often occur in clusters, creating a state of prolonged instability for the population living on the caldera's edge. Emergency shelters have been established to house those who can no longer return to their properties.
