Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to protect the state's electoral mandate following party defections.

The move comes as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faces a sudden loss of legislative strength in the Rajya Sabha. These defections threaten to weaken the party's influence in the upper house and challenge the democratic mandate of the Punjab electorate.

During a press conference on May 4, 2024, Mann said the decision of several party members to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was condemned. Reports on the number of defecting Rajya Sabha MPs vary between six [2] and seven [1].

"BJP has betrayed Punjabis and is playing ugly politics," Mann said [1].

The Chief Minister said that he will meet President Droupadi Murmu on May 5, 2024 [3] to address the situation. Mann said the move was an attempt to undermine the will of the people who voted for his administration.

Mann used a culinary metaphor during his address to describe the political climate, stating that "spices alone don't make a sabji" [2]. He said that the administration remains focused on governance despite the political turmoil caused by the shift in party loyalty.

"I will meet President Droupadi Murmu on May 5 to safeguard the mandate of the people of Punjab," Mann said [3].

The Chief Minister's request for presidential intervention highlights the severity of the split. By escalating the matter to the head of state, Mann is seeking a formal mechanism to prevent further erosion of his party's legislative standing in the region.

"BJP has betrayed Punjabis and is playing ugly politics."

The defection of six to seven Rajya Sabha MPs represents a significant blow to the AAP's legislative stability. By seeking the President's intervention, Chief Minister Mann is attempting to frame the party switches not as individual political choices, but as a violation of the democratic mandate provided by Punjab voters, potentially setting the stage for a legal or constitutional challenge against the defectors.
