Punjab authorities have ordered strict security measures and a robust deployment plan to ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram-ul-Haram 2026.
These precautions are intended to prevent untoward incidents during large religious gatherings. By coordinating police, military, and paramilitary forces, the provincial government aims to maintain order across high-risk areas and procession routes.
Inspector General Police Punjab Abdul Kareem began the coordination process on June 2, 2026 [1], during a meeting at the Central Police Office in Lahore. Kareem said the implementation of strict security protocols is necessary to safeguard the province during the religious period [1].
To bolster these efforts, the Punjab Home Department requested the Ministry of Interior to deploy Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel on June 8, 2026 [2]. A spokesperson for the Home Department said, "We have requested the Ministry of Interior to deploy Army and Rangers personnel for Muharram security across Punjab" [2].
Further coordination continued throughout the month. On June 21, 2026, Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari chaired a high-level meeting to finalize operational details [3]. Bokhari said, "A robust plan has been prepared for all majalis and processions" [3].
Other provincial leaders have emphasized the scale of the preparation. Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said, "We will ensure foolproof security arrangements across the province during Muharram-ul-Haram" [4]. The security strategy involves a combination of provincial police and federal paramilitary forces to monitor processions and majalis province-wide [2], [3].
Additional logistical support and safety alerts were coordinated through the Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar and the Punjab Home Department to ensure that public safety is maintained during both Eid-ul-Azha and the subsequent Muharram observances [4].
“"A robust plan has been prepared for all majalis and processions."”
The mobilization of both the Pakistan Army and Rangers alongside provincial police indicates a high-alert security posture. By integrating military assets into civil security for Muharram, the Punjab government is attempting to mitigate the risk of sectarian violence or targeted attacks that have historically occurred during these processions.
