Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, demanded the sacking of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during a Lok Sabha debate on Saturday.
The demand follows widespread student protests over an alleged paper-leak fiasco involving the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Gandhi's intervention signals an escalation in political pressure on the government to provide accountability for the examination process.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha in New Delhi, Gandhi said that moving Pradhan to another ministry is not acceptable. He positioned the removal of the minister as one of three non-negotiable demands [1] made by protesting students.
Gandhi said the minister is a "symbol of corruption, incompetence and misalignment" [2]. He said that Pradhan is a symbol of corruption and of what has happened to the future of India’s students [3].
"The Education Minister, who is corrupt, incompetent and misaligned, has to be sacked," Gandhi said [4].
The Congress leader said that the students are seeking direct accountability for the failures of the education ministry. By rejecting a reshuffle, Gandhi emphasized that a lateral move would not satisfy the demands of the youth or address the perceived systemic failures of the current administration.
