Roanne-Riorges Handball organized an inclusive weekend dedicated to handisport and handball activities on April 25 [1] and 26 [2], 2026.
The initiative aims to break down barriers to athletic participation by promoting sport accessibility and inclusion for athletes with disabilities. By centering the event around handball, the organizers sought to demonstrate that competitive and recreational sports can be adapted to accommodate all physical abilities.
The event took place in Roanne-Riorges, located within the Loire department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France. It was the result of a collaborative effort between Roanne-Riorges Handball (2RHB) and several regional partners, including the Ligue Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Handisport Roannais.
Additional support for the weekend came from the Rotary Club of Renaison and Crédit Mutuel. These partnerships provided the necessary infrastructure and funding to ensure the activities were accessible to all participants throughout the two-day period.
The program focused on integrating handisport into the broader community sports framework. By partnering with local organizations, 2RHB aimed to create a sustainable model for inclusive athletics in the Loire department.
Organizers designed the weekend to serve as both a competition and a community outreach tool. The event highlighted the specific needs of athletes with disabilities while showcasing the adaptability of handball as a sport.
“An inclusive weekend event dedicated to handisport”
This event reflects a growing trend in European regional sports to integrate 'handisport' into mainstream athletic clubs. By leveraging partnerships between private funding, such as Crédit Mutuel, and civic organizations like the Rotary Club, the initiative shifts the responsibility of accessibility from specialized centers to community-based sports clubs.
