Rocket Lab has joined the U.S. Space Force’s Space Data Network Consortium and received $12 million [1] in SDN-B orders.
This partnership expands the pool of vendors supporting the Space Data Network Backbone, which serves as the global military communications infrastructure for the U.S. Space Force [1, 3]. By diversifying its providers, the military aims to strengthen the resilience and capacity of its orbital data transmissions.
As part of this new agreement, Rocket Lab will conduct an optical-communications demonstration in orbit in 2027 [3]. This test will evaluate the company's ability to connect with the existing Space Force network using laser-based communication technology.
While the current SDN-B orders total $12 million [1], Rocket Lab has a growing history of high-value contracts with the U.S. government. The company previously secured a $90 million [4] contract with the Space Force for GEO satellites. Its largest launch contract to date is valued at $266 million [3].
The broader effort to modernize military space communications is evidenced by the NITE-STAR program, which totals $981 million [2]. This program reflects a wider strategic shift toward high-speed, secure data links in space to maintain a tactical advantage.
Rocket Lab, headquartered in Long Beach, California, will integrate its technology into the global infrastructure to support the Space Force's operational needs [2, 3].
