Romania's National Road Investment Company and an Italian consortium have signed the contract for the final section of the A8 motorway [1].
The agreement covers the design and construction of Section 4 of the Târgu Neamț-Iași-Ungheni Motorway, which includes a segment extending into the Republic of Moldova [1]. This development represents a critical step in expanding regional transport networks and facilitating cross-border movement.
CNIR said the contract is expected to be completed by July 2026 [1]. The project involves the Italian consortium ITINERA S., which will manage the construction of the remaining stretch of the motorway [1].
Infrastructure officials said the A8 is designed to serve as more than just a domestic route. A CNIR spokesperson said the section will connect Romania with Moldova and eventually with Ukraine [1]. This connectivity is intended to streamline the flow of goods and people across the eastern border of the European Union.
Representatives from ITINERA S. said the project is a key part of Romania’s infrastructure development plans [1]. The construction of the Târgu Neamț-Iași-Ungheni route is the final piece required to complete the A8 system, linking the interior of Romania to the Moldovan border [1].
The completion of this section will finalize the overarching goal of the A8 project, creating a high-speed corridor that reduces transit times between major urban centers and international checkpoints [1].
“The contract is expected to be completed by July 2026.”
The completion of the A8 motorway serves as a strategic geopolitical link, integrating Romania more deeply with its eastern neighbors. By extending the infrastructure into the Republic of Moldova and planning for a connection to Ukraine, Romania is positioning itself as a primary logistics hub for trade and transport between the EU and the East, potentially accelerating economic integration and security cooperation in the region.
