Trinity Metals is now exporting tungsten concentrate from its Nyakabingo mine in Rwanda to the U.S. defence supply chain.

This shift is part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to secure critical mineral supplies. By diversifying where it sources these materials, the U.S. aims to reduce its reliance on vulnerable overseas sources that could be disrupted by geopolitical tensions.

According to reports, the Nyakabingo mine supplies up to 20% [1] of the primary tungsten concentrate consumption used by the U.S. for defence purposes. Tungsten is a critical mineral known for its extreme hardness and high melting point, making it essential for various military hardware and munitions.

The partnership comes as U.S. defence policy highlights the strategic importance of domestic and allied critical mineral sources. The move toward Rwanda represents a tactical shift to ensure that the production of high-strength alloys, and armor-piercing projectiles, remains uninterrupted.

Trinity Metals operates the Nyakabingo facility, which has become a key node in the effort to stabilize the supply of tungsten. The mineral is often categorized as a strategic asset because it is indispensable for the manufacture of cutting tools, and aerospace components used in national security.

While the U.S. continues to seek domestic mining options, the integration of the Rwandan mine provides an immediate alternative to existing supply chains. This arrangement aligns with the current policy of securing minerals from diverse geographical regions to avoid single-point failures in the industrial base.
