Sagar Adani called for faster electrification and renewable energy integration to strengthen global energy security and sustainability during an event in London.
The push for rapid electrification is critical as India faces growing power demands and geopolitical uncertainty, which threaten economic growth and energy affordability.
Speaking at the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue at the Science Museum in London on June 27, 2024, Adani, the executive director of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), said that energy security, affordability, and sustainability are among the defining challenges of our time.
Adani highlighted the scale of the challenge facing the Indian power sector. He said India needs about 2,000 GW [1] of new power capacity to meet its future demand. To achieve this, he advocated for the integration of renewable energy with advanced storage solutions to ensure a stable and sustainable power grid.
He described the transition as an urgent necessity rather than a choice. "Accelerating electrification is not an option but an imperative," Adani said.
To support this agenda, there is more than USD 100 billion [2] in energy-transition investments backing electrification efforts. These investments aim to reduce reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and accelerate the shift toward green energy.
The Adani Group has set its own ambitious benchmarks for the coming years. The company targets 50 GW [3] of renewable capacity by 2030 to contribute to these broader national and global goals.
“"Energy security, affordability, and sustainability are among the defining challenges of our time."”
The call for 2,000 GW of new capacity underscores the massive infrastructure gap India must bridge to sustain its industrial growth. By emphasizing the link between energy security and geopolitical stability, Adani is positioning renewable energy not just as an environmental goal, but as a strategic national security requirement to avoid dependence on foreign energy imports.
