Jason Aebig, CEO of the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, called for urgent action on the downtown arena district and related development projects on Thursday.
The push for speed comes as the city faces potential financial losses and a loss of competitive standing compared to other municipalities. Aebig said that failure to act quickly would lead to unnecessary costs and delays for the city.
The request occurred during Mayor Cynthia Block's annual State of the City address on May 15. The event brought together city leadership and business representatives to discuss the future of downtown Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Aebig said that two major projects are currently stalled [1]. He said that the city must prioritize these developments to ensure the downtown core remains viable and attractive for future investment.
"We need urgent action on the arena district to avoid unnecessary costs and delays," Aebig said [2].
Mayor Block addressed the concerns regarding the pace of development during her speech. While acknowledging the friction in the process, she said she maintained a positive outlook on the timeline.
"These are just bumps in the road," Block said [3].
The Chamber of Commerce maintains that the arena district is a cornerstone of the city's economic strategy. The organization believes that prolonged inactivity could signal instability to potential developers and investors, potentially hindering the city's long-term growth goals.
“"We need urgent action on the arena district to avoid unnecessary costs and delays."”
The tension between the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce and City Hall reflects a broader struggle to balance bureaucratic due diligence with the speed required to attract private investment. If the city cannot resolve the stalls on these two major projects, it risks a 'chilling effect' where developers pivot to other Canadian municipalities that offer faster approval timelines and lower risk of cost overruns.
