Authorities in New Delhi arrested Satyendar Jain, a former Delhi water and health minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, on money-laundering charges.
The arrest targets a high-ranking political figure in a case involving significant public infrastructure funds. The outcome could influence the political landscape of the capital and the perceived integrity of the Delhi Jal Board.
The Enforcement Directorate filed the charges based on the alleged manipulation of four tenders [1] related to sewage-treatment plants. These tenders are valued at approximately ₹1,943 crore [1]. According to the chargesheet, Jain is one of 14 accused persons named in the investigation [1].
This is not the first time Jain has faced detention for these allegations. He previously served an 18-month jail term [2] in connection with the same case. While some reports indicate he was arrested this evening [2], other accounts state that the Rouse Avenue Court granted him bail on Friday [3].
Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, has defended the former minister. "The case will be proven fake," Kejriwal said [2].
The investigation focuses on how the tender process for the Delhi Jal Board was handled and whether funds were diverted for illicit purposes. The case remains an active investigation by federal authorities in New Delhi.
“"The case will be proven fake."”
The repeated legal actions against Satyendar Jain highlight the ongoing friction between the Aam Aadmi Party and federal investigative agencies in India. Because the case involves the Delhi Jal Board, a critical utility provider, the allegations of tender manipulation suggest systemic vulnerabilities in how New Delhi manages large-scale infrastructure contracts. The contradiction in reports regarding his current custodial status reflects the rapid legal shifts common in high-profile political cases in India.
