Indonesian nasi padang chain Sederhana has opened its first Singapore outlet at 738 North Bridge Road [2] in the Kampong Glam district [2].
The opening marks the arrival of a major regional brand in the local dining scene, occupying a site previously held by the iconic Singaporean eatery Warong Nasi Pariaman [3].
Asyraf Rasheed, a 33-year-old [1] biotechnologist-turned food-and-beverage entrepreneur, is the driving force behind the expansion. Rasheed said he sought to introduce the popular Indonesian chain to the city-state while maintaining a respectful distance from the history of the previous tenant [1].
The location at 738 North Bridge Road [2] serves as a strategic point for the brand's entry into the market. Because the site was formerly the premises of Warong Nasi Pariaman, the move has drawn attention regarding the transition of a historic local landmark to a foreign chain [3].
Rasheed addressed the sensitivity of taking over a space once occupied by a beloved local institution. He said his goal is to provide a new culinary experience rather than erase what came before.
"We're not trying to take over anyone's legacy," Rasheed said [1].
By bringing Sederhana to Singapore, Rasheed aims to leverage the brand's existing popularity in Indonesia to attract both expatriates and locals. The move reflects a broader trend of regional food chains expanding across Southeast Asian borders to capitalize on shared cultural tastes.
“"We're not trying to take over anyone's legacy."”
The entry of Sederhana into the Singaporean market signifies a shift toward the professionalization and scaling of regional ethnic cuisines. By occupying the former site of a local icon like Warong Nasi Pariaman, the brand is positioning itself within a high-traffic cultural hub, though it must navigate the delicate balance between corporate expansion and the preservation of local culinary heritage.
