Selvi S. Keerthana has become the youngest MLA in the new Tamil Nadu government following the victory of Thalapathy Vijay.
Her appointment marks a significant generational shift in the state's leadership and introduces a multilingual representative to the cabinet during a period of historic political transition.
Keerthana, a leader within the TVK party, represents the Sivakasi constituency in the Virudhunagar district [2]. At 29 years old, she is the youngest member of the legislative assembly in the current administration [3]. Some reports further identify her as the youngest minister in the government [2].
She is the first woman to be elected as an MLA from Sivakasi [2]. A former political consultant, Keerthana is noted for her linguistic abilities. She speaks five languages [1], including Hindi, Tamil, English, Telugu, and Malayalam [4].
"I am proud to be the first woman MLA from Sivakasi," Keerthana said [2].
The swearing-in ceremony took place in Chennai following the election results in May 2024 [1]. During post-election celebrations, Keerthana expressed confidence in the longevity of the new administration.
"We aim to become the longest serving government in Tamil Nadu," Keerthana said [1].
Her role in the cabinet is seen as a bridge for communication due to her fluency in multiple regional and national languages. "I speak five languages, including Hindi, Tamil, English, Telugu, and Malayalam," Keerthana said [4].
“I am proud to be the first woman MLA from Sivakasi.”
The elevation of a 29-year-old woman to a cabinet-level position in Tamil Nadu signals the TVK party's strategy to appeal to youth and gender diversity. By appointing a multilingual representative from the Sivakasi constituency, the government is positioning itself to better communicate across diverse linguistic demographics within the state and with the central government.
