Seoul is expected to reach its highest temperature of the summer this Monday, with forecasts predicting a peak of 37°C [1].
This surge in temperature signals a dangerous escalation in the region's summer heat, threatening public health and infrastructure as temperatures climb well above previous monthly records.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said that the heat wave is being driven by a shift in wind direction from west to east [2]. This east wind is moving the heat wave from the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula toward the western regions [2].
By 10:40 a.m. on Monday, the temperature in Seoul had already reached 32.5°C [1]. The KMA projects that midday temperatures will climb to 37°C [1]. This would surpass the previous high for the city recorded last month on the 12th, which was 35°C [1].
Other regions are facing even more extreme conditions. The KMA said that temperatures in Yangsan and Daegu will hit 39°C [3]. In the western regions surrounding the capital, Goyang and Guri are expected to reach 37°C [1]. Hanam, Osan, and Yeoju are forecast to see temperatures as high as 38°C [1].
"The heat wave that heated up the weekend is continuing without sign of tiring," a YTN anchor said [1].
Reporter Jang Ah-young of YTN said that the city's morning climb was rapid. "Seoul temperature already reached 32.5 degrees at 10:40," Jang said [1]. She said that the KMA expects temperatures to rise to 37 degrees during the day [1].
