Reporter Kim Min-kyung of YTN used a Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) weather-observation vehicle to map the city's surface heat around noon on Aug. 4 [1]. The vehicle recorded data at one-second intervals to create a precise heat map of the urban environment [1].

At Gwanghwamun Square, the ground temperature approached 50°C [1]. "The surface temperature approached 50 degrees," Kim said [1].

In contrast, the mobile unit found cooler conditions at a Namsan walking trail, where the surface temperature dropped to 33.6°C [1]. "On the Namsan walking trail, the surface temperature dropped to 33.6 degrees," Kim said [1].

The two measurement sites are located only two to three kilometers apart [1]. Despite this proximity, the temperature difference between the urban square and the forested trail exceeded 20°C [1].

Local officials have issued a public health warning as the city faces a critical heat emergency. An unnamed YTN anchor said, "Seoul is literally in a heat wave emergency" [1].
