Sephora is introducing "Quiet Hours" across all its global stores to create sensory-friendly shopping environments for neurodivergent customers.
This initiative addresses the physical barriers that often make retail spaces overwhelming for people with sensory processing differences. By modifying the in-store environment, the company aims to expand accessibility for a demographic that has frequently requested these changes.
During these designated periods, the beauty chain will reduce the volume of in-store music, minimize strong scents, and adjust the brightness or activity of screens, a reporter for MSN said.
These modifications are designed to eliminate common sensory triggers. A Sephora representative said, "Avoiding these sensory triggers aims to make shopping more accessible for neurodivergent customers, including shoppers with autism and ADHD."
The decision to scale the program follows a testing phase conducted earlier this year. The initiative was piloted in 32 stores [1] across eight markets [1], a reporter for MSN said.
Following the success of that pilot, the company is deploying the sensory-friendly hours in all regions globally. The rollout ensures that the same standards for lowered stimuli are applied across the brand's entire international footprint.
The move follows a growing trend in retail where companies are auditing their physical environments to accommodate neurodiversity. By focusing on the three primary triggers — auditory, olfactory, and visual — Sephora is attempting to create a more inclusive experience for those who find standard retail environments overstimulating.
“Avoiding these sensory triggers aims to make shopping more accessible for neurodivergent customers”
Sephora's global rollout of 'Quiet Hours' signals a shift in retail strategy from general accessibility to specific neurodivergent inclusivity. By standardizing sensory reductions across all markets, the company is recognizing that sensory overload is a significant barrier to commerce for people with autism and ADHD, potentially expanding its customer base while setting a precedent for other high-stimulus luxury retailers.
