Political leaders are debating whether Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar will join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) instead of merging with Congress.
The potential shift would significantly alter the political landscape in Maharashtra. A move toward the NDA could weaken the opposition's INDIA bloc and consolidate power for the current government in the region.
Speculation regarding a merger between the opposition Congress and the NCP intensified in June 2026 [1]. This possibility has prompted officials from the Bharatiya Janata Party to publicly court Pawar, suggesting that the NDA is a more viable path for the NCP leader.
Union Minister Ramdas Athawale said, "Sharad Pawar should join NDA, not Congress" [2].
BJP spokesperson Vishwas Pathak said that the attraction to the NDA is based on leadership and national identity. Pathak said leaders see no prospects under Congress and are attracted to Narendra Modi’s leadership and patriotism [3].
However, opposition figures have condemned these overtures as strategic maneuvers. Advocate Kapil Madan said the BJP’s courting of Sharad Pawar is hollow, power-first politics, and a nightmare for the INDIA bloc [3].
The debate centers on whether Pawar's political survival depends on aligning with the ruling coalition or strengthening the opposition through a formal merger. While the BJP continues to argue that the Congress party offers no future for seasoned leaders, the INDIA bloc views the NDA's efforts as an attempt to destabilize the opposition's unity in Maharashtra.
“"Sharad Pawar should join NDA, not Congress."”
This political tug-of-war highlights the fragile nature of opposition alliances in India. If Pawar chooses the NDA over a Congress merger, it would signal a continuing trend of regional power brokers aligning with the BJP to maintain influence, potentially isolating the Congress party further in Maharashtra.
