Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha pledged he will not desert party leader Mamata Banerjee following speculation of internal party dissent [1, 2].
The statement arrives as rumors of a "rebel camp" within the party surfaced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered praise for Banerjee [1, 3]. Sinha's public affirmation aims to stabilize his standing within the party and counter narratives that he might shift his political allegiance.
Speaking to the media in New Delhi, the veteran actor and lawmaker addressed the buzz surrounding his loyalty. Sinha said he has always been loyal to Banerjee, whom he referred to as "Didi," and intends to remain so [2, 3].
"I will not desert Mamata Banerjee in difficult times. She stood by me when I was going through a tough phase," Sinha said [2].
Sinha's commitment is rooted in personal gratitude toward the TMC supremo. He said that because Banerjee supported him during a previous difficult period, he cannot abandon her now [1, 2].
This display of loyalty follows a period of political transition in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 12 years in office [1]. Despite the Prime Minister's recent positive comments regarding Banerjee, Sinha said any notion that such rhetoric would create a rift or encourage a breakaway faction within the TMC is dismissed [1, 3].
"Mamata Banerjee stood by me; I will not leave her in her difficult times," Sinha said [1].
“"I will not desert Mamata Banerjee in difficult times."”
Sinha's public pledge serves as a strategic move to shut down speculation about party instability. In the volatile landscape of Indian coalition politics, high-profile defections are common; by explicitly linking his loyalty to Banerjee's past support of him, Sinha is attempting to frame his political commitment as a matter of personal honor rather than mere political convenience.
