President Claudia Sheinbaum demanded the U.S. present concrete evidence regarding allegations that Governor Rubén Rocha Moya has links to drug trafficking.
The standoff tests the diplomatic relationship between Mexico and the U.S. as it pits national sovereignty and the presumption of innocence against American security intelligence.
Sheinbaum first addressed the accusations on April 30 [1]. She requested that the U.S. provide specific proof to support the claims made against the governor of Quintana Roo [3]. The president emphasized the necessity of due process and the legal presumption of innocence for those accused of crimes.
Sheinbaum said she would have acted the same way regardless of the governor's political affiliation. "Actuaría de la misma manera si fuera del PRI, PAN o MC," she said [2].
In follow-up comments on May 1 [2], the president said she was not under extreme pressure due to the accusations. She said she is calm and not caught between a rock and a hard place, a phrase referring to the Spanish expression "entre la espada y la pared" [2].
Opposition parties, including the PAN, MC, and PRI, have condemned Sheinbaum's support for Rocha Moya [1]. These parties said the president's defense of the governor undermines the fight against organized crime.
Despite the criticism, Sheinbaum maintained that Mexico possesses the sovereign right to manage its own security matters. She said the administration remains tranquil while awaiting the evidence requested from U.S. authorities [2].
“"Solicitamos a EE. UU. que presente pruebas concretas de la acusación contra el gobernador Rubén Rocha Moya."”
This confrontation highlights the ongoing tension between U.S. intelligence-led accusations and Mexico's insistence on formal judicial evidence. By framing the defense of Rocha Moya as a matter of due process and sovereignty, Sheinbaum is attempting to shield her administration from political fallout while signaling to Washington that anecdotal or classified claims are insufficient to trigger Mexican legal action.
