Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde praised the formation of the BJP government in West Bengal on Saturday.
The shift in power in one of India's most politically contested states signals a significant realignment of regional influence and a mandate for the BJP's governance model.
Shinde described the election result as a public verdict for change and development. He said the victory reflects the trust people have placed in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The transition follows an election in which the BJP won 207 seats [1].
Speaking on the day of the swearing-in ceremony, Shinde highlighted the emotional impact of the transition. "There is a wave of happiness in the state," Shinde said [2].
The oath-taking ceremony for the new administration, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, took place on May 9, 2026 [3]. Shinde referred to the new setup as a "double-engine government," a term often used to describe states where the same party holds power at both the state and federal levels.
He said the new government is poised to bring a wave of development to the region. Shinde emphasized that the scale of the victory demonstrates a clear desire among the electorate to move away from previous administrations, a shift he believes will accelerate infrastructure and economic growth in West Bengal.
“There is a wave of happiness in the state.”
The formation of a BJP government in West Bengal, supported by a substantial seat count of 207, removes a long-standing political stronghold of the opposition. By framing this as a 'double-engine' government, Shinde and the BJP are signaling a strategy of streamlined coordination between the state capital and New Delhi to implement federal development schemes more aggressively.
