Singapore is opening three new Circle Line MRT stations on July 12, 2024 [1], completing the transit line's loop.
The completion of the loop creates a seamless connection between HarbourFront station and Marina Bay station. This infrastructure expansion is intended to improve transit access to the Central Business District and the Greater Southern Waterfront [1].
The new stations include Keppel, Cantonment, and Prince Edward Road [1]. By closing the gap between the existing termini, the network allows for more efficient travel patterns across the city's southern corridor.
Jeffrey Siow, Acting Minister for Transport, said, "It will finally be a real circle" [2].
Before the official start of passenger service, the transport authority will provide a public preview. Commuters can ride for free between the stations during this preview on July 4, 2024 [1], [3].
The project aims to alleviate congestion in the city center by providing alternative routes for commuters. The new stations will serve as key access points for workers in the CBD and visitors to the developing waterfront areas [1].
This expansion represents the final piece of the Circle Line's original design. The integration of these three stations allows the line to function as a continuous orbital route, linking various residential and commercial hubs without requiring passengers to transfer through the city center.
“"It will finally be a real circle."”
The closing of the Circle Line loop transforms the network from a horseshoe shape into a full circle, reducing travel times for commuters moving between the east and west of the city. By linking HarbourFront and Marina Bay, Singapore increases the redundancy of its transit system, allowing for better load distribution across the MRT network as the Greater Southern Waterfront develops into a major urban hub.
