The Canadian government may pause or cancel the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds aerobatic team, potentially grounding the fleet for years.
The potential loss of the team would remove a primary symbol of Canadian military precision and public engagement, as the team is based in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Conservative MP Fraser Tolmie said the program faces a critical juncture. "We may have to pause or even cancel the Snowbirds program," Tolmie said. He said that the summer of 2026 [1] could be the last chance for Canadians to see the team perform before a possible grounding occurs.
The issue centers on the CT-114 Tutor aircraft, which were introduced in the 1960s [2]. These planes have become increasingly costly to maintain as they age. Defence Minister David McGuinty said the CT-114 Tutor fleet is aging and retirement must be considered [3].
Financial pressures are also a factor, with $30 million [4] allocated to keep the fleet airworthy. This funding struggle has led to conflicting reports regarding the team's longevity. While some officials warn of an immediate shutdown, others maintain the team is secure.
Liberal MP Stephen Fuhr said the Snowbirds will fly for generations to come [5]. Similarly, Minister McGuinty said in other contexts that people will still be able to enjoy the Snowbird formation for generations [6].
Despite these assurances, the discrepancy between the Ministry of Defence's retirement considerations and the public promises of longevity has created uncertainty. The government is expected to provide further clarity on the future of the Moose Jaw-based team later this month [7].
“"We may have to pause or even cancel the Snowbirds program."”
The tension between the technical reality of aging 1960s-era aircraft and the political desire to maintain a national icon suggests a looming budgetary or procurement crisis. If the government cannot secure a viable replacement aircraft or sustainable funding beyond the current $30 million allocation, the team may face a multi-year hiatus regardless of political assurances.
