Twelve military members and veterans are participating in the Soldier On golf program at Mactaquac Greens ahead of the Explore N.B. Open [1].

The initiative focuses on fostering community and providing recreational opportunities for those who have served in the military. By integrating professional instruction with social interaction, the program aims to support the mental and social well-being of veterans during their transition to civilian life.

Participants in the program have engaged with three different courses [2] to refine their skills. The curriculum includes professional lessons and course play, culminating in their participation in the Explore N.B. Open, with play scheduled for Monday, July 10 [1].

Sergeant Major David MacMillan said, "This is a great opportunity for our members to connect and build camaraderie."

The program is designed to bridge the gap between military service and civilian integration. A reporter for CBC New Brunswick said the Soldier On program provides a valuable outlet for veterans to transition back into civilian life.

Participants also have the opportunity to interact with professional athletes. One unnamed participant said, "We're excited to be part of the Explore N.B. Open and share our experience with the professional golfers."

The events are centered around the Fredericton area, utilizing the facilities at Mactaquac Greens to facilitate the training, and networking components of the program [1].

"This is a great opportunity for our members to connect and build camaraderie,"

The use of adaptive sports and recreational programs like Soldier On serves as a strategic tool for veteran reintegration. By combining skill-building with peer support, these programs address the social isolation that often accompanies the transition from military to civilian life, leveraging community-based sports to improve long-term mental health outcomes.
