The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said it will redouble efforts to register eligible voters for upcoming local government elections.
This push is critical because the commission will limit voting to a person's residential ward. Voters who are not registered in the specific area where they live will be unable to cast a ballot in these local contests.
The local government elections are scheduled for Nov. 4, 2026 [1]. The IEC said citizens should ensure they are registered in the correct ward to avoid disenfranchisement on election day.
According to the commission, the drive focuses on getting the eligible electorate to the polls by emphasizing the necessity of correct registration. Because the polls will not allow voting outside a voter’s residential ward, the accuracy of the voters' roll is a primary objective for the agency.
The commission has introduced a new logo and the tagline "Get up. Show up. Vote" to accompany this registration campaign. This branding aims to increase visibility, and encourage participation across the country.
Officials said the focus remains on ensuring that every eligible citizen who wishes to participate in the local governance process is correctly documented in their respective wards before the deadline.
“Voting will be limited to that ward.”
The IEC's emphasis on ward-specific registration highlights a rigid structural requirement for local elections that differs from national contests. By restricting voting to residential wards, the commission aims to ensure local representation, but it also creates a higher risk of voter exclusion if citizens fail to update their registration following a move.
