Buddhist monks and citizens gathered at temples across South Korea today to celebrate Buddha's Birthday through nationwide Bongchuk Buddhist ceremonies [1].
These celebrations serve as a focal point for spiritual reflection and community gathering, emphasizing the Buddhist tenets of compassion, and mutual prosperity during a time of global instability.
The events took place at various locations, including Jogyesa Temple in Seoul [1]. Central to the celebrations was the "관불의식," a ritual washing of the infant Buddha statue, which symbolizes the purification of the mind and the removal of greed and anger.
Ven. Jinwoo, the president of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, led the proceedings. During the ceremony, he addressed the root causes of human suffering. "The Buddha said that all suffering originates from greed, anger, and foolishness," Jinwoo said [1].
The ceremonies marked the Buddhist calendar year 2,570 [1]. Thousands of participants joined the monks in prayer, seeking health and happiness for their families, and a more harmonious existence for society at large.
Lay participants expressed a desire for a shift toward greater kindness in daily interactions. Lee Yebin, a participant in the ceremonies, spoke about her hopes for the future. "I hope my family and I can be healthy and happy, and I thought it would be good if many people could live while showing mercy to each other, just as the Buddha said," Lee said [1].
The nationwide events combined traditional liturgical practices with public gatherings, reflecting the ongoing influence of Buddhism in South Korean cultural and social life. The rituals aimed to promote a spirit of coexistence and peace among the citizenry.
“The Buddha said that all suffering originates from greed, anger, and foolishness.”
The scale of the Bongchuk Buddhist ceremonies highlights the enduring role of Buddhism as a pillar of South Korean social cohesion. By emphasizing 'harmony and coexistence' during the 2570 Buddhist year, the religious community is positioning spiritual practice as a remedy for modern societal stressors and interpersonal conflict.
