Extreme heat and tropical nights are gripping South Korea, with temperatures in the Yeongnam region approaching 40 °C [4].
This intensification of seasonal heat puts thousands at risk of heat-related illnesses, as high humidity and high-pressure systems prevent nighttime cooling.
In the Yeongnam region, the heat has reached critical levels. Yangsan saw temperatures rise rapidly from the morning to hit 39 °C [6]. Busan also recorded a temperature of 39 °C [7], while Daegu reached 37 °C [8]. These conditions prompted the YTN Weather Desk to announce that a "heat wave severe warning" is currently in effect for Busan and seven other locations in Gyeongsangnam-do [9].
Reporter Koh Han-seok said, "Yangsan in Gyeongnam saw temperatures rise rapidly from the morning, reaching 39 degrees" [6].
Seoul is also experiencing significant heat, though temperatures are lower than in the south. Daytime temperatures in the capital reached between 32 °C and 34 °C [2]. The actual temperature in Seoul was recorded at 25.3 °C [3], while the apparent temperature was measured at 27.7 °C [1].
The heat is compounded by a lack of rainfall to cool the atmosphere. Meteorological data suggests that these tropical nights, where temperatures remain high after sunset, could persist for over one week [10]. This prolonged cycle of extreme heat and humidity is driven by seasonal high-pressure conditions [11].
Local authorities continue to monitor the seven locations in Gyeongsangnam-do under the most severe warnings to ensure public safety during the peak of the afternoon heat.

The convergence of high humidity and high-pressure systems creates a 'heat dome' effect, which prevents the land from cooling overnight. This lack of nocturnal relief increases the physiological strain on the human body, making the current heat wave more dangerous than dry heat events and increasing the likelihood of heatstroke across the Yeongnam region.
