In Yangsan, temperatures reached 41.6°C [1]. This city has seen temperatures exceed 41°C for two consecutive days [1]. Meanwhile, the cities of Gimhae and Changwon both surpassed 40°C for the first time in their recorded history [1].
Reporter Jung Hye-yoon of YTN said that the Gyeongnam region is currently trapped in extreme heat. This phenomenon is the result of a "dry monsoon" characterized by a lack of rainfall, combined with a double high-pressure system over the Korean Peninsula that drives hot winds [1, 2].
Local topography has further exacerbated the crisis. Jung said that the basin topography of the region prevents geothermal heat from escaping, effectively trapping the warmth [1].
Meteorologists warn that the current pattern is not stationary. Jung said that the extreme heat is expected to move to Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan area next week [1].
