South Korea expects early summer weather with clear skies and significant temperature swings for Memorial Day on June 6 [1].
The forecast is critical for millions of residents planning holiday activities, as the shift brings both high heat and specific environmental hazards. Officials are warning the public to prepare for high UV exposure and dangerous coastal conditions.
In Seoul, the current temperature is 23.8 °C, which is about three °C below the average [1]. However, temperatures will rise sharply tomorrow. Seoul is expected to start the morning at 16 °C and reach an afternoon high of 28 °C [1]. Daejeon and Gwangju will see morning lows of 14 °C [1], while Gwangju and Daegu are forecasted to hit 29 °C by the afternoon [1].
Weather officials said that the clear skies bring associated risks. The UV index nationwide is expected to reach "high to very high" levels [1]. Additionally, ozone concentrations will be dense in many regions, with the exception of Gangwon [1].
"The UV index nationwide will soar to 'high to very high' levels, and ozone concentrations will also appear thick in various places except Gangwon," a YTN weather report said [1].
While much of the country remains clear, some regions face precipitation. Light rain is expected from the morning through midday along the southern Gyeongsang coast [1].
Coastal safety is another primary concern for the holiday. High risks of rip currents and strong wave swells are expected along the east sea coast and Jeju Island [1].
"Tomorrow, which is Memorial Day and the solar term 'Mangjong,' will also be accompanied by generally clear skies," the YTN weather report said [1].
“The UV index nationwide is expected to reach 'high to very high' levels”
The transition to early summer weather during a national holiday increases the likelihood of heat-related illnesses and sun exposure injuries. The simultaneous occurrence of high ozone levels and dangerous rip currents suggests that public health and safety officials will need to monitor both urban air quality and coastal beach activity more intensely than during the spring months.
