South Korean researchers confirmed natural spawning in three of five newly installed underwater hatching facilities for giant octopuses off the East Sea coast [1].
This development marks the first time such specialized spawning and hatching infrastructure has been integrated into artificial reefs to combat declining octopus populations. By providing a controlled environment for reproduction, the project aims to increase the total volume of fish resources, and restore the local ecosystem.
Kim Du-ho, director of the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency's East Sea Northern Office, led the research team in deploying the units at a depth of 15 meters [1]. The facilities consist of internal boxes measuring 50 centimeters in width and 90 centimeters in height [1]. To support the resident octopuses, the team provides food once per week [1].
Observations conducted within two to three weeks of installation revealed that giant octopuses weighing more than 15 kilograms had utilized the sites [1]. The success rate was high, with spawning confirmed in three of the five total units [1].
"I believe it is a meaningful effort to increase the recruitment of giant octopus resources by reintegrating egg-bearing mother octopuses into nature to participate in spawning," Kim said [1].
The project specifically targets the recovery of giant octopus populations, which have seen a decrease in overall catch volumes. By creating a sanctuary for the spawning process, the agency hopes to ensure a higher survival rate for hatchlings before they enter the open ocean.

The successful use of these artificial spawning sites suggests that giant octopuses are receptive to man-made habitats for reproduction. If these results can be scaled, it may provide a viable blueprint for the artificial recovery of other declining cephalopod species, reducing the reliance on wild population fluctuations and stabilizing the commercial fishing industry in the East Sea.
