The South Korean government and Hyundai Motor Group have installed a facility that extracts hydrogen from biogas produced during sewage treatment [1].

This project establishes a resource-circulation model by turning waste methane into eco-friendly fuel. By capturing biogas that would otherwise be emitted, the initiative aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and diversify the sources of clean energy production [1, 2].

The facility is located at a public sewage-treatment plant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province [1, 2]. It utilizes a methane-reforming process that separates carbon dioxide and hydrogen through a reaction involving water and heat [2].

Kim Sang-beom, head of the Hyundai Motor Group Resource-Circulation Hydrogen Business team, said the facility uses hydrogen extraction technology to separate carbon dioxide and hydrogen by reacting methane with water using heat [2].

The plant has a maximum daily hydrogen production capacity of 500 kg [1]. This output is sufficient to fuel approximately 100 hydrogen passenger cars or 30 hydrogen buses each day [1].

This collaboration between the public sector and a private automotive giant represents a shift toward decentralized energy production. By integrating fuel extraction into existing urban infrastructure, the project reduces the need for transporting hydrogen from large-scale industrial plants to urban centers [1, 2].
