Water storage at the Unmun Dam in Cheongdo County has fallen to 24.8% [1], sparking concerns over regional water supplies.
The decline threatens the stability of water distribution for Daegu, Gyeongsan, and surrounding areas. Because the dam serves as a critical reservoir for these urban centers, the current deficit could lead to shortages if rainfall does not increase.
The reservoir's current state represents a sharp drop compared to the previous year. At the same time last year, the storage level was 63% [1]. This significant decrease indicates a rapid depletion of available water resources over the last 12 months.
Local weather patterns contributed to the crisis during the most recent monsoon season. Rainfall in the Cheongdo region reached only 18 mm [1], a figure that falls far below normal expectations for the period. The lack of precipitation prevented the reservoir from recharging after the summer heat.
Reporter Lee Yoon-jae of YTN said the storage level is now less than half of what it was last year, and water supply disruptions have already begun to occur [1]. The current level is officially recorded at 24.8% [1].
Authorities are monitoring the situation as the drought persists. The low water levels have left large sections of the reservoir bed exposed, reflecting the severity of the precipitation deficit in North Gyeongsang Province.

The drastic drop in the Unmun Dam's capacity highlights the vulnerability of South Korea's regional water infrastructure to erratic monsoon patterns.
