SpaceX announced Tuesday it will build a $100 billion [1] rocket launch site on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana.
The project represents a massive expansion of the company's infrastructure to support the Starship program. By increasing launch frequency, SpaceX aims to accelerate its long-term space-flight goals and provide a significant economic boost to the U.S. [1, 3].
Located in coastal wetlands near Abbots, Louisiana, the new facility will be named Starbase Louisiana [1, 3]. The company said the project is its biggest facility to date [2]. Construction is slated to begin in 2027 [4], with the first Starship launch expected in 2029 [4, 5].
The scale of the site is designed for high-volume operations. The facility will feature 10 launch pads [2] and more than 12 launch towers [1]. This infrastructure is intended to support thousands of launches per year [2].
"Starbase Louisiana will ultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day," a SpaceX spokesperson said [1].
Louisiana officials have welcomed the announcement. Governor Jeff Landry said, "This is a big win for Louisiana and the United States," likening the economic impact to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase [3].
The project focuses on expanding the capacity of the Starship rocket, the largest ever built. The ability to launch more than 30 flights per day [1] would mark a shift from experimental testing to a routine transportation cadence for cargo, and passengers to space.

The establishment of Starbase Louisiana signals SpaceX's transition toward a high-frequency launch model. By moving toward a capacity of thousands of flights per year, the company is building the industrial throughput necessary for large-scale lunar and Martian colonization efforts. However, the location in coastal wetlands may introduce significant environmental regulatory challenges and climate-related risks, such as hurricane vulnerability, for a $100 billion investment.
