SpaceX announced Tuesday a plan to build a $100 billion [1] Starship spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.
The project marks a strategic pivot for the aerospace company as it prepares to wind down Falcon 9 operations and transition to the larger Starship vehicle. By establishing a dedicated hub in the Pecan Island area, SpaceX aims to scale its launch frequency and operational capacity.
The facility, named Starbase Louisiana, will span approximately 125,000 acres [2]. The master plan includes the construction of five launch complexes [3] to support the heavy-lift rocket. Construction is slated to begin in 2027 [4], with the company targeting the first Starship launch from the site in 2029 [5].
Economic projections indicate the development will create more than 3,000 jobs [6] for the region. The project is not limited to aerospace infrastructure; SpaceX said the plan includes coastal-wetland protection, and restoration efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of the massive site.
The investment comes as the company seeks to solidify its infrastructure for deep-space missions. The scale of the Louisiana site is designed to handle the immense size and propellant requirements of the Starship system, the most powerful rocket ever built.
While the company has operated launch sites in Texas and Florida, the Louisiana expansion provides a new geographic corridor for orbital departures. This diversification reduces reliance on existing sites and allows for a more aggressive launch schedule as the company moves toward its long-term goals of lunar and Martian exploration.
