Spain has declared a national emergency after forest fires burned over 120,000 hectares since January [1].

While some reports characterize this as the worst fire season in years [1], historical data suggests the current destruction is lower than previous peaks. In 2025, almost 400,000 hectares were burned across the country [6]. Despite this, the intensity of the current fires near Valencia and central Spain has strained local resources.
Emergency crews continue to battle the flames in the Madrid and Ávila regions, where the combination of dry vegetation and high temperatures has made containment difficult. The national emergency declaration allows for the deployment of additional military and civil resources to support regional firefighting teams.
