Aerial drone footage from the Guardia Civil shows a forest fire has burned roughly 50,000 hectares [1] across the Madrid and Ávila regions.
The scale of the destruction marks a historic turning point for Spanish environmental management. This blaze is now the largest fire on record in Spain since records began, signaling an escalation in the intensity of the nation's fire seasons.
The fire impacted several municipalities, including Piedralaves and San Martín de Valdeiglesias in the Madrid region, as well as Burgohondo in the province of Ávila [1]. To monitor the rapidly shifting fire front, the Guardia Civil deployed specialized drone operators to capture high-resolution imagery of the affected terrain.
Sara Aagesen, the minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), highlighted the unprecedented nature of the event. "Ha quemado ya unas 50.000 hectáreas, lo que lo convierte en el mayor incendio de la historia de España desde que se tienen registros," Aagesen said [1].
Spanish authorities said the current fire season is extraordinarily intense. The use of aerial technology has become critical for the Guardia Civil to assess the impact of the blaze and coordinate emergency responses in the rugged terrain of the Madrid-Ávila border.
While other regional fires have occurred, such as a blaze in Los Gallardos, Almería, which burned approximately 6,600 hectares, the Burgohondo fire remains the dominant catastrophe of the season due to its sheer size [1].
