Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said a new agreement with the United Kingdom on Gibraltar is a historic step toward regional cooperation.
The deal aims to resolve long-standing border frictions by granting Spain Schengen-area access at Gibraltar’s port and airport. This shift is intended to improve cross-border movement and foster economic growth in the surrounding region.
Sánchez said the agreement establishes a customs union with the European Union. He said the arrangement would directly impact the Campo de Gibraltar area in Spain, where approximately 300,000 people reside [1].
"This historic agreement marks the fall of the last wall in continental Europe," Sánchez said during a livestream on Feb. 28, 2024 [2].
The Spanish leader said the treaty would move beyond previous disputes to create a framework for shared stability. He said the move would open a new chapter of coexistence and shared prosperity with the United Kingdom [1].
By integrating the port and airport into the Schengen framework, the two nations seek to reduce congestion, and streamline the flow of goods and people. The agreement was officially announced on Feb. 28, 2024 [1].
"It will benefit the 300,000 people living in the Campo de Gibraltar area and open a new chapter of coexistence and shared prosperity with the United Kingdom," Sánchez said [1].
“This historic agreement marks the fall of the last wall in continental Europe.”
This agreement represents a significant diplomatic shift in the post-Brexit relationship between the UK and the EU. By addressing the specific status of Gibraltar through Schengen access and a customs union, both nations are prioritizing economic pragmatism and regional mobility over territorial disputes, potentially creating a blueprint for other contested border zones in Europe.
