Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio revealed a new combat system for its upcoming title, Stranger Than Heaven, during the Xbox Presents showcase [1].
The new mechanics represent a significant shift in the developer's approach to action gameplay. By decoupling the protagonist's movements, the studio aims to introduce a layer of tactical depth not seen in previous titles.
The combat system allows players to control the left and right sides of the protagonist independently [2]. According to a gameplay overview video, the RB and RT buttons control the right side, while the LB and LT buttons control the left side [3].
"The combat system lets you control each hand independently, opening up new tactical possibilities for players," IGN staff said [4].
This mechanical complexity is designed to complement the game's expansive scope. The title will span five eras and five cities [5, 6]. These eras include the years 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965 [7].
Developers indicated that the environment and time period will influence how the gameplay feels. Gematsu staff said the game will feature five cities, each with its own distinct combat feel [8].
BleedingCool staff said, "This is an all‑new level of combat design from us, and what you see here is just the tip of the iceberg" [9].
The reveal occurred during the Xbox Partner Preview livestream, where the studio demonstrated how the independent limb control functions in real-time combat scenarios [1, 10].
“The combat system lets you control each hand independently, opening up new tactical possibilities for players.”
The transition to an independent limb control system suggests RGG Studio is attempting to move away from traditional beat-em-up tropes toward a more complex action-simulation style. By tying these mechanics to five distinct historical eras, the studio is likely using the control scheme to differentiate the combat styles of different time periods, increasing the game's overall variety and replay value.
