Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku have released the first official combat gameplay trailer for their upcoming title, "Stranger Than Heaven" [1].

The reveal provides a first look at the mechanics of a multi-era storyline, signaling a departure from the contemporary settings typical of the studio's previous work. The game is scheduled for release on Jan. 15, 2027 [1].

The trailer highlights combat in three specific Japanese locations across different time periods. These include Kokura in Fukuoka during 1915, Kure in Hiroshima in 1929, and Minami in Osaka in 1943 [1, 2].

There are conflicting reports regarding the total scope of the game's settings. IGN said the trailer showcases three locations [1], while GameSpot and other outlets said the combat gameplay spans five cities across five different eras [2, 3].

The title will launch across several platforms, including PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox PC, and Xbox Cloud [1].

This footage first appeared during the Xbox Partner Preview week in early May 2024 [2]. The developers said they intend to use these varied historical backdrops to frame a five-year storyline that integrates combat and adventure [2, 3].

The game is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027.

By shifting the Ryu Ga Gotoku studio's focus from modern urban environments to the early 20th century, Sega is expanding the narrative reach of its action-adventure portfolio. The inclusion of specific dates like 1915, 1929, and 1943 suggests a plot deeply rooted in Japan's transition toward the mid-century era, potentially blending historical realism with the studio's signature combat style.
