The Sudanese army intercepted drone attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting neighborhoods in Omdurman and Khartoum Bahri [1].
These clashes signal an ongoing struggle for control over the capital's strategic hubs, where the RSF seeks to expand its influence and force military concessions.
Army sources said to Al Jazeera that the RSF drones failed to achieve their objectives because air defense systems blocked their path [1]. The attacks focused on northern Omdurman, as well as districts in the south and west of the city [2].
"Air defense systems belonging to the Sudanese army repelled the attempts of RSF drones in northern Omdurman," a spokesperson for the Sudanese army said [1].
Violence has remained persistent across the capital region. Reports from the Anadolu Agency noted that violent clashes broke out between the army and the RSF in southern and western Omdurman on Friday, April 20, 2025 [2].
President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has previously stated the military's intent to reclaim the city. "We continue to liberate the capital from the control of the RSF, and we will target any attempt to attack the neighborhoods of Omdurman and Khartoum Bahri," Burhan said [3].
While military sources maintain the drone strikes were unsuccessful [1], other reports indicate the RSF continues to maintain control over certain areas of Omdurman following the offensive [4]. The conflict continues to displace residents as both sides fight for territorial dominance in the northern and southern sectors of the capital.

The use of drone technology by the RSF demonstrates a shift toward asymmetric aerial warfare in the battle for Khartoum. While the Sudanese army's ability to intercept these drones suggests a functioning air defense perimeter, the contradictory reports regarding territorial control indicate a stalemate. Neither side has achieved a decisive victory, leaving the capital's strategic neighborhoods as volatile flashpoints.
