NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule met activist Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar on Friday to urge him to end his hunger strike [1].
The meeting comes as Wangchuk's health declines during his protest against alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and his demand for the Union Education Minister's resignation [1, 3].
Wangchuk has been fasting for 20 days [2]. Medical reports indicate his current weight is 56.55 kg, having lost 350 grams in the last 24 hours [4]. His latest vital signs include a blood pressure reading of 108/68 mmHg, a blood sugar level of 80 mg/dL, and a pulse rate of 72 beats per minute [4].
Doctors warn of possible organ involvement as the activist loses more weight [4].
Sule told Wangchuk that she intends to bring his grievances to the national legislature. "We will fight in Parliament," Sule said [2]. She said, "We will raise this matter in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament" [1].
The protest at Jantar Mantar has drawn attention to the administration of national entrance exams and the accountability of education officials. Wangchuk has remained steadfast in his demands despite the physical toll of the strike, a situation that has prompted various leaders to rally behind his cause [3].
““We will fight in Parliament.””
The intervention by a Member of Parliament suggests a transition of the protest from a public demonstration to a formal legislative challenge. By pledging to raise the issue during the Monsoon Session, Sule is attempting to provide a political exit ramp for Wangchuk that maintains the pressure on the Union Education Minister without risking the activist's life.
