A lotus-shaped, 16.95-carat lab-grown diamond artwork has been launched into orbit aboard the Vikram-1 rocket [1].
The mission marks the first time diamonds from the Surat diamond hub have reached space. It serves as a symbol of the intersection between India's traditional jewellery industry and its emerging private aerospace sector.
The artwork was created by a jewellery company from Surat in partnership with Skyroot Aerospace [1]. The piece consists of 32 lab-grown diamonds [2] and took six months to craft [2]. It was carried aboard the Vikram-1 [3], which is India's first privately developed orbital-class rocket [3].
The launch took place at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh [3]. The project aims to showcase India's growing capabilities in private space exploration while highlighting the technical precision of the Surat hub's lab-grown diamond production [1].
By integrating high-value artwork into an orbital mission, the partnership emphasizes the commercial potential of private launch vehicles. The Vikram-1 rocket represents a shift toward a more diversified space ecosystem in India, one where private entities handle both the launch logistics and the payload design [3].
“The mission marks the first time diamonds from the Surat diamond hub have reached space.”
This mission demonstrates the increasing synergy between India's private industrial sectors and its aerospace ambitions. By utilizing a privately developed orbital-class rocket to transport a luxury product, India is signaling that its space program is expanding beyond government-led scientific research into commercial and symbolic ventures.
