Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced Friday in Kolkata that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari will become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal.
The appointment marks a historic shift in regional power, as the BJP secures its first opportunity to lead the state government after achieving a majority in the Legislative Assembly.
Speaking at a gathering in Kolkata, Shah designated Adhikari as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party. "Suvendu Adhikari is Bengal's future CM," Shah said [1]. In a separate video report, Shah referred to the leader as the "West Bengal CM-elect" [2].
The transition follows the party's broader strategic goals for the region. "Sonar Bangla is BJP's responsibility," Shah said while outlining the party's vision for the state [3]. The new government is scheduled to be sworn in on May 9, 2026 [4].
The announcement coincided with other significant state events. On the same day Shah spoke, 970,000 students received their Class 10 board results [5]. This political shift impacts a state with a population of approximately 106 million residents [6].
Adhikari's rise to the leadership role comes as the party prepares to implement its legislative agenda. The appointment of a Chief Minister is the final step in the BJP's transition from the opposition to the governing body of West Bengal.
“"Suvendu Adhikari is Bengal's future CM," Amit Shah said.”
The selection of Suvendu Adhikari as Chief Minister signals the BJP's intent to consolidate power in West Bengal by appointing a leader with deep local ties. By establishing a government for the first time in the state, the BJP is moving from a strategy of electoral disruption to one of direct governance, which will test the party's ability to manage a diverse population of 106 million residents.
