Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Friday that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari will become the next chief minister of West Bengal.
This transition marks a significant political shift in the region, as the BJP has successfully dismantled the long-standing leadership of the Trinamool Congress in one of India's most contested states.
Shah said the announcement following the declaration of election results on May 8, 2026 [2]. He said that Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency, a location traditionally viewed as Banerjee's stronghold [3].
"I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal," Shah said [1].
The BJP secured a commanding majority in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, winning 207 seats [4]. Shah thanked the voters for the mandate and said that the party remains committed to the "Sonar Bangla" development goal, a vision for a prosperous and golden Bengal.
Adhikari's victory over Banerjee in Bhabanipur serves as a symbolic centerpiece of the party's broader success. The win in this specific constituency underscores the BJP's ability to penetrate urban strongholds that were previously impenetrable for the party.
Government formation processes are expected to follow the announcement. Shah said the victory was a milestone for the party's growth in the east, focusing on the transition of power from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP.
“I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal.”
The BJP's victory and the appointment of Suvendu Adhikari signify a major realignment of power in West Bengal. By winning 207 seats and defeating the incumbent chief minister in her own stronghold, the BJP has shifted from being an opposition force to a dominant governing body. This result likely indicates a voter mandate for the 'Sonar Bangla' development agenda and a rejection of the previous administration's tenure.
