Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been named the chief minister-designate of West Bengal following a historic election victory.
This appointment marks a significant political shift in the state, as the BJP prepares to lead West Bengal for the first time. The transition follows a decisive mandate that alters the regional power balance in eastern India.
The announcement came after the BJP secured 207 seats [1] in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. This victory provided the party with a substantial majority, prompting the leadership to appoint Adhikari to lead the state government.
Amit Shah said, "I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal."
Following the announcement, Adhikari delivered his first address as chief minister-designate at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata. Speaking to newly elected members of the legislative assembly, he outlined the initial priorities for his administration as it prepares for the official swearing-in process.
The gathering at the convention centre served as the first formal meeting of the BJP's legislative wing in the state. Adhikari's address focused on the transition of power, and the party's mandate to govern the region.
Party officials are currently finalizing the date and time for the formal swearing-in ceremony, as well as the guest list for the event. The process will officially install Adhikari as the first BJP chief minister in the history of West Bengal.
“The BJP secured a historic victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.”
The appointment of Suvendu Adhikari signals the end of long-term political dominance by previous administrations in West Bengal. By securing 207 seats, the BJP has moved from an opposition role to a commanding majority, which likely means a comprehensive overhaul of state policy and administration to align with the party's national agenda.
