Suzuki Motor Corporation announced the e SKY, its first passenger electric vehicle in the kei-car class, scheduled for release in Japan this autumn [1].
The move comes as the Japanese automotive market faces intensifying pressure from domestic competitors and new entrants from China. By entering the electric kei-car segment, Suzuki aims to protect its market share in a category traditionally dominated by small, fuel-efficient vehicles.
Suzuki said the e SKY can travel up to 310 kilometers on a single charge [2]. Other reports indicate a range of over 270 kilometers [3]. The company said that the vehicle features the most efficient energy use per kilometer of any domestic EV [1].
Competition in the small-car segment has accelerated as Nissan and Honda expand their electric offerings. Additionally, Chinese manufacturers such as BYD have entered the market, bringing aggressive pricing and advanced battery technology, factors that have forced Japanese legacy automakers to speed up their electrification timelines.
Suzuki plans to launch the vehicle in the domestic Japanese market [1]. While the company has not detailed global export plans for this specific model, the e SKY represents a strategic pivot toward battery-electric technology for its smallest passenger vehicles.
A Suzuki spokesperson said the vehicle requires the least amount of electricity per kilometer of any domestic EV [1]. This focus on efficiency is intended to appeal to urban drivers who prioritize low operating costs, and ease of parking in dense city environments.
