Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi arrived in London on Sunday to hold talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer [1].
The meeting serves as a critical alignment session ahead of the G7 summit, focusing on high-stakes security cooperation and energy transitions between the two island nations.
Discussions are expected to cover the stabilization of the situation in Iran and the assurance of navigational safety in the Strait of Hormuz [2]. The leaders also intend to address the current state of affairs in Ukraine and East Asia [3].
"Based on the latest situation, we will exchange views on, for example, the situation in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, and also the situation in East Asia," Takaichi said [3].
Beyond security, the visit includes economic and environmental agreements. The leaders are set to discuss an investment agreement for offshore wind power generation on the east coast of Scotland, with an investment scale of 1.9 trillion yen [2].
Defense collaboration remains a primary pillar of the agenda. The prime ministers will negotiate funding contributions for the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet [2].
Reports on Takaichi's arrival time vary. One source said she arrived before four a.m. Japan time [1], while another said her arrival occurred during the afternoon of June 14 [4]. The summit meeting is scheduled for the afternoon [4].
“The leaders will discuss G7 coordination, Middle East stability, and a 1.9 trillion yen offshore wind investment.”
This diplomatic visit signals a deepening of the UK-Japan strategic partnership, moving beyond traditional security ties into integrated energy infrastructure and advanced military hardware. By synchronizing their positions on the Middle East and East Asia before the G7 summit, both nations aim to present a unified front on global stability and maritime security in the face of rising regional tensions.
