Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Vijay expanded his cabinet on Friday by swearing in two alliance-partner MLAs as ministers.
This expansion solidifies the coalition government by bringing the Viduthalai ChiraiPkali Party (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) into the power table. By allocating ministerial berths to these partners, Vijay aims to maintain political stability and represent a broader coalition of interests within the state administration.
The new inductees are Vanni Arasu of the VCK and AM Shahjahan of the IUML. The appointments followed the approval of the recommendation by Governor RN Ravi, which occurred on Thursday [1].
The expansion brings the total size of the coalition ministry to between 33 [3] and 35 members [2]. This range reflects differing reports on the final tally of the cabinet following the induction of the new ministers.
The move comes after Vijay secured a majority and formed the coalition government, necessitating a distribution of portfolios to satisfy the requirements of his political allies. The induction of Arasu and Shahjahan marks a strategic move to ensure the continued support of the VCK and IUML in the legislative assembly.
Officials in Chennai managed the swearing-in ceremony, marking the formal entry of the two leaders into the executive branch of the Tamil Nadu government. The process was designed to integrate the diverse political priorities of the coalition partners into the state's governance framework.

The inclusion of VCK and IUML leaders in the cabinet signals a move toward a more inclusive coalition strategy. By distributing power among alliance partners, Chief Minister Vijay is mitigating potential friction within his majority government and ensuring that minority and Dalit interests—represented by the IUML and VCK respectively—have a direct voice in the state's executive decision-making process.
