The state-run Arasu Cable TV network in Chennai removed three Tamil news channels from its service on Tuesday [1].
The move has sparked a political confrontation in Tamil Nadu, as opposition leaders argue the government is using its control over infrastructure to silence dissent. Because the state-run network is a primary distributor for many households, the removal effectively cuts off a significant portion of the viewing public from these specific outlets.
The affected channels are Polimer News, News Tamil 24x7, and Tamil Janam [1]. Opposition leaders, including Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Annamalai, have condemned the action as a targeted effort to curtail the flow of information.
"Press freedom is under attack," said E. Palanisamy (EPS) [2].
The opposition alleges that the removal of these three [1] channels is not a technical or administrative decision but a political one. They argue that the government is attempting to isolate voices that are critical of the current administration.
"The government is trying to silence critical voices by pulling these channels off the cable network," said Edappadi K. Palaniswami [2].
Annamalai also criticized the move, framing it as an injustice against the public's right to information. He said, "We will fight this injustice and ensure that the people get unbiased news" [2].
The Arasu Cable TV network is the primary state-operated cable service in the region. The removal of these channels has led to widespread calls from opposition parties for the government to restore the services immediately to maintain democratic transparency.
“"Press freedom is under attack."”
This incident highlights the tension between state-controlled media distribution and independent journalism in India. When a government-run entity like Arasu Cable TV controls the 'last mile' of delivery to consumers, it possesses the power to effectively censor media outlets without needing a formal legal ban. This creates a precarious environment for press freedom where technical removal serves as a tool for political leverage.
