DMK MP Kanimozhi said Friday she cannot react to speculation regarding a potential post-poll alliance between the DMK and AIADMK.

The statement comes as Tamil Nadu faces a hung assembly where no single party has reached the 118-seat majority threshold [2]. The outcome has created a high-stakes scramble for power, as traditional rivals consider unprecedented cooperation to prevent the rise of a new political force.

Reports from Firstpost suggest the DMK and AIADMK are considering coming together to keep the TVK party, led by actor Vijay, out of power. This potential shift in alignment would see two long-term adversaries unite to maintain the existing political order.

Kanimozhi emphasized the role of the electorate in the current deadlock. "It is people’s mandate, and in democracy it is the most important thing," Kanimozhi said [1]. When asked specifically about the reports of talks with the AIADMK, she said, "I cannot react to speculations" [1].

Other party officials have provided more definitive denials. TKS Elangovan, a DMK spokesperson, said the party has not discussed any alliance with the AIADMK and will wait until May 10 [3].

The urgency of these negotiations is driven by the narrow gap in seat counts. The TVK party won 108 seats in the 234-member assembly [2], just 10 seats short of the majority mark. Meanwhile, the Congress party secured five seats [3], adding another layer of complexity to the coalition math.

As the May 10 deadline approaches, the state remains in a period of political uncertainty. The possibility of a DMK-AIADMK pact remains a subject of intense media scrutiny despite the official denials from the DMK leadership.

"It is people’s mandate, and in democracy it is the most important thing."

The political landscape of Tamil Nadu is experiencing a significant disruption. The rise of Vijay's TVK as a major force with 108 seats has fundamentally altered the traditional bipolar contest between the DMK and AIADMK. If the two legacy parties form an alliance, it would signal a defensive consolidation to preserve the established political guard against a populist challenger.
