The Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, won 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections [1].
This result creates a legislative stalemate because the TVK is the largest single party but does not hold enough seats to govern alone. The party must now secure coalition partners to reach the majority threshold and form a government.
In the 234-member assembly, a party or coalition requires 118 seats to achieve a majority [2]. Despite their strong performance, the TVK remains 10 seats short of that target [1].
Several smaller parties now hold the balance of power. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has not yet decided which party it will support. This indecision leaves the path to the chief minister's office uncertain for Vijay.
Other political factions have already aligned themselves. The Left parties and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have pledged their support to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). These groups prefer the DMK due to existing political alignments.
Religious organizations have also weighed in on the political landscape. Raja Freeman, Chairman of CSI Zion Church, said, "We will support DMK."
As the TVK seeks partners to bridge the gap to 118 seats, the DMK remains a viable alternative if it can consolidate enough support from the Left, IUML, and other undecided members of the assembly.
“TVK won 108 seats, falling short of the 118-seat majority”
The 2026 election results signal a shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, as a party led by a cinema icon has disrupted the traditional dominance of established blocs. However, the inability of the TVK to secure an outright majority means that the state's governance will depend on the willingness of smaller, identity-based parties like the VCK to compromise, potentially leading to a fragile coalition government or a strategic return to power for the DMK.
